Outsourcing Compliance

We recently had our compliance officer move on and my CU is exploring outsourcing this role. Does anyone have experience with outsourcing their compliance department? If so, I'd love some recommendations for firms that could do it. Also, were there any issues with the regulators by not having someone on staff? We're at about 620 million in assets.
