Vendor Financial Reviews

We've recently enhanced our vendor management program and are doing more formal due diligence reviews.  An issue we're encountering is that several vendors are not willing to provide full financial statements.  

I'm curious how others might be evaluating the financial health of their vendor partners in lieu of reviewing financial statements?
